Francis Webster, was a member of the ill-fated Martin Handcart Company of 1856. Weakened by starvation, illness, and freezing blizzards, Webster recalled moments where he simply could not find the strength to push through the heavy sand and steep hillsides. Yet, as he reached his point of complete exhaustion, his wooden handcart began to move forward on its own, pushed by an unseen force. As Webster later testified: “I have looked back many times to see who was pushing my cart, but my eyes saw no one. I knew then that the angels of God were there.” This artwork honors the invisible hands that carry us through our deepest extremities, serving as a testament that we are never truly left to walk our hardest roads alone.
