Joseph and Emma Smith shared an abiding love that was tested by the fiercest trials of early Church history. Marrying in 1827 despite heavy family opposition, Emma stood firmly by Joseph’s side, even acting as one of his very first scribes during the translation of the Book of Mormon. Her vital role in the Restoration was spiritually formalized in July 1830 when a revelation declared her an “elect lady” called to support her husband in his afflictions.
This prophetic title was fully realized in 1842 when she was chosen as the first general president of the Relief Society. Throughout their 17-year marriage, Joseph and Emma endured the tragic loss of several children, threats from violent mobs, and constant upheaval. Yet, their private correspondence displays a beautiful, tender friendship. Joseph once wrote to her from a distance, stating, “My heart is entwined around yours forever and ever”, illustrating a profound romantic and spiritual connection that endured until his martyrdom in 1844.
