Herding

As the Willie Handcart Company prepared for its grueling journey, Joseph Elder was assigned the exhausting task of herding the company’s cattle. Managing a large herd of livestock across hundreds of miles of open prairie required constant vigilance, physical stamina, and immense patience. Elder and his fellow herdsmen were responsible for keeping the animals together, protecting them from predators, and guiding them to water and grazing spots each night. Because the safety and pulling power of these animals were vital to the company’s survival, his demanding role as a cattle guard kept him on his feet for long, dusty hours, anchoring the company’s mobile lifeline from the very start of the emigration.
