Hundreds of Latter-day Saints lined the shores of the Mississippi river. They were destitute, freezing temperatures and scant food supplies and nowhere to go. They were driven from the state of Missouri by the decree of Governor Lilburn W Boggs, under his infamous extermination order. To their credit the people of Quincy welcomed them all into their homes. Men, women, and children survived the winter because of their kindness.
