Frances and Ann Webster left Liverpool, England in May of 1856. They had been married only five months and were expecting their first baby. They chose to cross the plains by handcart and gave the rest of their considerable wealth to the Church Perpetual Emigration Fund to assist others. Francis would later state of this experience:

Was I sorry that I chose to come by handcart? No! Neither then nor any minute of my life since. The price we paid to become acquainted with God was a privilege to pay and I am thankful that I was privileged to come in the Martin Handcart Company.
