Waiting anxiously at the mouth of Emigration Canyon was William Willie, the teenage son of Captain James G. Willie. William had not seen his father in four years, and now he watched him return a broken man. Captain Willie feet were so severely frostbitten that he would walk with a cane for the rest of his life. The emotional reunion between the heavily laden, battle-weary captain and his young son brought a bittersweet end to the trek.
