The painting is designed to show Aurelia Spencer Rogers as a 12-year-old looking back across the Mississippi towards Nauvoo with a protective arm and shroud over her younger sister Catherine.
Aurelia would later organize the original primary organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, now the largest children’s organization in the world. Her desire to help children can best be described in a poem she wrote:
“Our children are our jewels, we have counted well the cost, may their angels ever guard them, and not one child be lost.”
