Abigail Scott Duniway — Oregon-bound seventeen year old Abigail “Jenny” Scott dreamed of caring her name on Independence Rock. Arriving at the monolith, Abigail and her three sisters scaled the landmark, looking for the perfect place to record their names for posterity. Just as the girls made their way to the top, their wagon train departed, nearly leaving them behind! Abigail’s dream would not be fulfilled. She eventually made it to Oregon and championed women’s rights for 41 years. After Oregon’s Equal Suffrage Proclamation in 1912, Abigail was the first woman that registered to vote. Abigail was an author, public speaker, promoter of women’s suffrage, and journalist for her own weekly newspaper. “When women’s true history shall have been written, her part in the upbuilding of this nation will astound the world.” Abigail Scott made her mark on history.
